Prevention and treatment of malnutrition

What is the treatment of malnutrition? The only solution for malnutrition is giving enough protein reach food (body building food) and Vitamins and minerals (defensive food) like beans, milk, fish, fruits, green and fresh vegetable, eggs, and meat.

One important thing is malnourished child need extra food than other child so it is important to give more food to child than what they usually give, the child eat at least 5 to 6 times a day. Keep in mind that they need more and more protein and energy food so, give the mixture of protein and energy food which must be well cooked because it is easy to digest.

Again I’m repeating that breast milk is best for babies try to give breast milk at least up to 2 years. After the first four to six months, the baby should begin to get other nutritious food in addition to breast milk.

I think this is enough explanation for balanced diet, in my coming posts I’m going to elucidate about the important exercises which are essential in our day to day life.

Kwashiorkor and Marasmus

Kwashiorkor:

It is found that it can occur at any time but often it starts between the ages 11/2 to 4 years. Mostly it is found in babies who will fed with small amount of breast milk and other foods, which is very low to his need. It is a serious sickness and needs urgent medical care. Deficiency of protein rich food cause kwashiorkor, however he will get some protein from breast milk and other stable food but he used that small amount of protein for produce energy for his daily need. Therefore, he has no protein left to row and make his body strong. We call this wet malnutrition because is body is swollen (edema) especially the face, forearms, hands, legs and feet. The belly and the genitals may also be swollen. Because of swelling and because he have even some fat, the child with kwashiorkor look plump rather than thin. But if you look at his upper arms, you will find them surprisingly thin.

The child is unhappy, cries over long periods or sits still and has no interest in anything, even in food. The skin is pale which may have sores with fluid coming out of it or the skin peels off. The skin may have dark brown patches. The hair pale, brownish, thin and breaks off easily. The child may also have anemia and vitamin A deficiency.

Marasmus:

A child with Marasmus is younger, between 6 months to 2years old. It is usually seen in children from poor families who were given diluted milk from an early age. Marasmus develops because the child does not eat enough of any kind of food. In other words, he is starved.

The child is thin and wasted. There is no fat between the skin and bones. They are called “skin and bones” children. The belly is distended. The skin is wrinkled and he looks like an old man. A child with marasmus is usually hungry.

Signs Malnutrition

What is the sign of malnutrition?
Malnutrition is often most severe in children, who need lots to grow well and stay healthy. There are different forms of malnutrition.
  • Malnutrition in pregnant women
  • Malnutrition in children

Malnutrition in pregnant women:
How to recognize a pregnant women, what she is malnourished or not, first see her outer aberrance if she is thin with loose of folds of skin over the chest, abdomen, and arm. One very big sign is the thin legs and arms, if her legs and arms are thin, then she is suffering from malnutrition. Most importantly conduct a Doctor test the body take all of the medicine descript by the doctor and eat protein rich food, not only protein, eat mixture of all kinds of food as mentioned on earlier posts.

Malnutrition in Children:
There are two types of malnutrition in children;

Mild Malnutrition: it is a most common form of malnutrition, but it is not always noticeable. As comparing to well-nourished child, the mild malnourished child does not grow or gain weight. Although he may appear rather thin and small, he usually does not look sick. However, because he is poorly nourished, he may lack strength (resistance) to fight infection. So he becomes more seriously ill and takes longer to get well as comparing with well-nourished child.
Infectious diseases like Measles, Tuberculosis and many other form of disease mostly attack this form of children, so it is important to give special care and more foods before they become ill.

Sever malnutrition: It mostly occurs with babies because if breast feeding is early or suddenly stopped. The two examples of sever malnutrition is MARASMUS(dry malnutrition) and KWASIORKOR( wet malnutrition)

In my next post I will explain the Marasmus and Kwashirokor.

Malnutrition

Anybody who does not eat enough body-building and energy food because he does not have enough money or because lack of knowledge in nutrias food or because of any illness is said to be poorly nourished or malnourished. He suffers from malnutrition.
If we are not eat well or we are unable to give the required protein, vitamins, minerals, fat etc. to body it will cause lots of health and mental related problems
Malnutrition is the most common cause of the following health problems:
In children:
• Unable to think properly, slow talking and walking.
• Night blindness, dryness of eyes, blindness
• Unable to grow and gain weight us per age.
• common illness and infection that last longer, are more severe, and more often cause of death,
• swelling of feet, face and hands, often with sores or marks on the skin
• sadness, lack of energy, weakness,
• swollen bellies, thin arms and legs, dry skin

In anyone:
• weakness and tiredness
• loss of appetite
• Anemia
• Sores in the corners of mouth
• Hurting or sore tongue
• Burning or lack of sensation of the feet.

Maulnutrion may be the direct cause of the health problems just listed. But in addition poor nutrition weakens the body’s ability to resist and fight all kinds of diseases, especially infection:
• Poor nourished child more expected to get diarrhea and it causes to death.
• Tuberculosis is more common and gets worse rapidly in those who are malnourished(not only children adults also effected with Tuberculosis due to malnutrition)
• Even minor problem like the common cold are often worse and last longer , or lead to pneumonia more often in person who are poorly nourished.

So, these are the causes of malnutrition, then how to recognize malnutrition in my next post I’m going to explain this.

Best Food for Baby

From 4 months to 1 year of Age:

Continue to give the baby breast milk, if possible until he reaches 2 years of age. When the baby is 4 month old, start giving him other wood as well. This food must be well cooked and mashed. When baby first tastes such type of food, he spit it out. Because this foods are new to baby, but the mother should keep feeding him this food. Soon he will enjoy this food. Nutritious feeding can be made by combining at least one food from each of the following groups:

Staple food: Wheat, Rice, Potato, tapioca

Protein food: peas, pulses, beans, groundnut, soybeans, dark green leafy vegetables, milk, egg, fish.

High energy foods: Fats, oils, cheese, butter, ghee, honey, white sugar.

Vitamins and Minerals: Dark green vegetable, fruit.

4 to 6mounth:

  • Well cooked split pulse and mixed with mashed rice
  • Well cooked green leaf vegetables, mashed bananas, papaya, or other ripe fruits.
  • Half boiled egg yolk mixed with a little milk
  • Porridge made with wheat and other stable food.

6 month to 1 year:

  • Rice, green leafy vegetable, milk, egg, fish, potato, ripe fruit, honey, beans.

Baby between 6 month to 1 year of age are most likely to become malnourished. It is dangerous because they often do not show any signs of malnutrition. A small child has a small stomach. He cannot eat a lot of food at one time. So feed him often. By six months, a baby should eat five to six times a day.

Babies best Food

Up to 0 to 4 month: Breast milk is the best and purest food for babies. It is better than any baby food or formula. If you give the baby only breast milk during the first months, this helps protect him against diarrhea and many infection.
Most mothers have enough milk for their babies. Milk will flow if the baby sucks the breast. The more the baby sucks, the more milk will be made.
If the mothers breast does not make enough milk drink lot of water and other liquids the more liquid the more milk. She must eat better food with rich protein and vitamins will help her make more milk for baby.
If the mother’s breasts do not give any milk drink lot of liquid and eat better, let the baby suck her breast often, sometimes her breast will begin to make milk. If it does not work, give the baby some other type of milk like cow milk, goat milk or powder milk etc. don’t use condensed milk.
Always add boiled water in which milk you used. Add 2 parts cow milk, 1 part boiled water, 1 teaspoon sugar.
Always boil the milk and water, it is better to use cup and spoon to feed instead of baby bottle. If a bottle and nipple is used to fed baby please boiled the bottle and nipple each time the baby fed to avoid lots of infection and disease.

Better food

To eat right means to eat enough. But it also means to eat a balance of the different foods the body needs. To stay healthy, try to eat supplementary foods from each group, as often as possible.

Breast milk: For baby up to six month, breast milk is healthiest and complete food there is no need of any other food. The mother can eat plenty of protein rich food which produces prefect baby food that is breast milk. It also prevent baby from many disease.

Rice, wheat and other grains: Unpolished rice, wheat and grains are more nutritious than polished one. Moderately polished rice and whole wheat contain more vitamins than the white, over polished product. The protein in rice, wheat and other grains can be better used by the body when they are eaten with beans and lentils.

Cereal: different cereals supply the body different proteins. A mixture of different cereals will supply the body with all protein it needs.

Dark green vegetables: it contains tons of vitamin A and diffident amount of protein and iron. Especially the leaves of sweet potatoes, beans and peas are very nutritious.

Green leaves of Root vegetables: It seems that instead of radish and tapioca, its leaves are had more proteins.

Egg and chicken: Egg is one of the cheapest and best form of animal protein and chicken is a good form of animal protein.

Things to avoid in our diet:

  • Alcoholic drinks
  • Tobacco
  • Too much pepper and spices
  • Greasy food
  • Lot of sugar and sweets
  • Too much coffee or tea
